Bitmain Plans Its First U.S. Crypto Mining Facility: Bloomberg

Bitmain, a leading manufacturer of cryptocurrency mining hardware, is establishing its first U.S. facility, signaling a significant shift in its global operations. The company, known for its Antminer rigs, plans to commence production in early 2026, with a Texas or Florida location currently under consideration. This expansion involves the creation of 250 local jobs, marking a substantial investment in the American market.

The decision follows President Trump’s 2022 call for domestic bitcoin production and comes amidst increasing challenges for Bitmain in its traditional manufacturing hubs in Southeast Asia. Heightened U.S. scrutiny of Chinese technology companies, coupled with escalating trade tensions and tariffs, has disrupted supply chains and slowed equipment delivery. These factors, along with delays caused by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, have prompted Bitmain to seek a more secure and efficient production base within the United States.

While acknowledging higher labor costs in the U.S., Bitmain’s global business chief, Irene Gao, maintains the move is commercially viable. The new facility will streamline deliveries and repairs for American customers, a crucial factor in maintaining market competitiveness. The company’s decision also reflects the growing importance of the U.S. as a cryptocurrency mining hub, a shift precipitated by China’s 2021 ban on bitcoin mining. The U.S. now hosts publicly traded crypto miners such as MARA Holdings and CleanSpark, highlighting the burgeoning domestic market.

Bitmain’s previous foray into Texas in 2019, with the establishment of a bitcoin mining farm, demonstrates the company’s long-term interest in the region’s low energy costs. However, the current status of this facility remains unclear. Despite the considerable potential, Bitmain’s U.S. venture faces potential hurdles, including regulatory scrutiny and the uncertain application of export control rules for AI chips to its cryptocurrency mining hardware. The company’s success will hinge on its ability to navigate these complexities while capitalizing on the opportunities presented by the expanding American cryptocurrency market. The blacklisting of Sophgo, an AI firm linked to Bitmain, by the U.S. Commerce Department, further underscores the regulatory challenges Bitmain faces in its new venture.
