CoinDCX Dismisses Report of Coinbase Acquisition Talks
CoinDCX, India’s leading cryptocurrency exchange, has publicly denied reports of a potential acquisition by its U.S. counterpart, Coinbase. CEO Sumit Gupta swiftly dismissed the rumors circulating on Tuesday via a post on X (formerly Twitter), directly contradicting an earlier report from Mint. Mint’s article, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter, claimed Coinbase was in advanced acquisition talks with CoinDCX, suggesting a valuation significantly below CoinDCX’s $2.2 billion valuation from 2021 – potentially less than $1 billion.
The report also indicated that Coinbase already holds equity stakes in both CoinDCX and its competitor, CoinSwitch, adding another layer of complexity to the situation. Gupta’s denial on X was emphatic, emphasizing CoinDCX’s unwavering commitment to its India-centric growth strategy. He stated that the exchange is “super focused” on building within the Indian cryptocurrency market and is not currently for sale. While promising further clarification later, his immediate response aimed to quell the speculation decisively.
Coinbase, for its part, adopted a more cautious approach, declining to comment directly on the acquisition rumors. The company issued a statement reiterating its broader mission of promoting global economic freedom and its ongoing pursuit of various strategic opportunities – including building, buying, partnering, and investing – to accelerate its overall roadmap. This non-committal stance leaves room for interpretation, neither confirming nor denying the possibility of future acquisitions.
The timing of these reports is notable, coinciding with CoinDCX’s recent experience with a $44 million security breach. Although the breach targeted an operational wallet, CoinDCX reported swift containment of the issue, assuring users that the affected crypto assets remained secure in cold storage. While the security incident might not be directly related to the acquisition rumors, it adds a layer of context to the overall situation surrounding CoinDCX. The company’s robust response to the security breach may partially explain its confidence in refuting the acquisition speculation and its stated focus on its Indian operations.
