Hong Kong’s IVD Medical Adds $19M Ether to Its Treasury

IVD Medical Holdings, a Hong Kong-based company, has significantly expanded its cryptocurrency holdings by acquiring $19 million worth of ether (ETH). This strategic move positions ETH as a central component of their novel real-world asset (RWA) tokenization strategy. The company’s initiative, ivd.xyz, aims to tokenize pharmaceutical intellectual property and other healthcare assets, leveraging the Ethereum blockchain’s smart contract capabilities.

The decision to prioritize ETH stems from its established position as a mature smart contract platform, boasting high liquidity and increasing institutional acceptance, underscored by the recent SEC approval of a spot ETH ETF. IVD plans to utilize ETH across multiple facets of its operations. On-chain ownership verification, automated revenue distribution, and compliance governance for tokenized assets will all rely on the Ethereum network. Furthermore, ETH will serve as the settlement layer for IVD’s upcoming IVDD stablecoin, facilitating cross-border transactions within compliant frameworks in Hong Kong and the U.S. Revenue generated from RWA transactions will be automatically converted to ETH and added to the company’s treasury.

To enhance returns and liquidity while mitigating risk, IVD intends to employ various ETH-based strategies, including staking, re-staking, and participation in on-chain derivatives markets. This proactive approach distinguishes IVD from other Hong Kong Exchange (HKEX)-listed companies that have adopted cryptocurrency holdings. While many have favored Bitcoin (BTC), IVD’s focus on ETH highlights a distinct strategy.

Several HKEX-listed companies currently hold crypto assets in their treasuries. Boyaa Interactive holds over $300 million in BTC, having previously converted its ETH holdings. Meitu, which previously held both ETH and BTC, has since exited its crypto positions. Smaller BTC holdings are reported for Yuxing InfoTech, Moon Inc., and Walnut Capital. IVD’s investment is further solidified through a newly announced partnership with HashKey Group, a Hong Kong-licensed cryptocurrency exchange. This collaboration underscores a growing trend of institutional adoption of cryptocurrency within the Hong Kong financial landscape, particularly focusing on the utility and potential of Ethereum’s smart contract capabilities for real-world applications.
