Coinbase Adds DEX Trading to U.S. Platform in Push Toward Becoming an ‘Everything App’

Coinbase is integrating decentralized exchange (DEX) trading into its main app, expanding its services beyond centralized trading. This move, excluding New York State, aims to solidify Coinbase’s position as a comprehensive crypto platform, offering users a blend of centralized and decentralized trading options.

The new feature leverages DEX aggregators like 0x and 1inch, accessing liquidity from decentralized markets including Uniswap and Aerodrome. Users can now trade an expanding list of Base-native tokens directly within the Coinbase app, without transferring funds off-platform. This includes assets from projects such as Virtuals AI Agents, Reserve Protocol, Centrifuge, SoSo Value, Auki Labs, and Super Champs.

DEX trading offers several advantages appealing to crypto users. The inherent self-custody and permissionless nature eliminates reliance on a central exchange for order matching and settlement. Transactions occur directly on the blockchain, potentially providing access to a wider range of assets, faster listings, and lower fees. However, it’s crucial to acknowledge the risks associated with DEX trading, such as smart contract vulnerabilities and volatility in thinly traded markets.

Coinbase’s integration of DEX trading strengthens its position as a gateway to both centralized and decentralized crypto markets. This strategy reflects the broader trend of Web3 integration into mainstream platforms, catering to users seeking greater control over their digital assets. The success of platforms like HyperLiquid, a decentralized derivatives exchange with $11 billion in monthly volume, further validates this approach. The integration also offers a non-custodial trading option, mitigating counterparty risk highlighted by the FTX collapse.

The recent surge in DEX trading volume underscores the growing demand for decentralized platforms. DefiLlama data reveals daily DEX volume at $12.8 billion, significantly exceeding Coinbase’s $3.5 billion, with monthly volume surpassing $407 billion. Coinbase’s move strategically positions the company to capitalize on this upward trend and cater to a broader user base seeking diverse trading options.
