Robinhood Enters Canada by Taking Over Crypto Exchange WonderFi for $179M
Robinhood’s Expansion into the Canadian Crypto Market: Acquisition of WonderFi
Robinhood Markets, Inc. (HOOD), a prominent California-based financial services company, announced its acquisition of WonderFi Technologies Inc. (WNDR), a Canadian cryptocurrency firm, for $178.98 million in an all-cash transaction. This strategic move represents a significant step in Robinhood’s international expansion strategy, particularly within the burgeoning Canadian cryptocurrency market.
The acquisition values WonderFi at C$0.36 per share, a premium of 41% over its closing price before the announcement. This deal underscores Robinhood’s commitment to expanding its crypto offerings beyond its existing US base. According to Johann Kerbrat, SVP and GM of Robinhood Crypto, WonderFi’s diverse portfolio of brands caters to both novice and experienced cryptocurrency users, aligning seamlessly with Robinhood’s objectives in Canada.
WonderFi’s portfolio includes two leading Canadian cryptocurrency platforms: Bitbuy and Coinsquare. These platforms boast substantial trading volumes, with a 28% increase to C$3.57 billion in fiscal year 2024. This acquisition will instantly provide Robinhood with a strong foothold in the Canadian market, allowing them to compete directly with established players like Coinbase and Wealthsimple Crypto.
This strategic acquisition follows Robinhood’s earlier move to acquire Bitstamp last year, further demonstrating the company’s ambition to establish a significant global presence. The Canadian market is attractive due to its growing adoption of cryptocurrencies and its relatively sophisticated regulatory environment. Robinhood’s entry will undoubtedly intensify competition and potentially stimulate further innovation within the Canadian crypto landscape.
The deal comes amidst a period of increased merger and acquisition activity within the cryptocurrency industry. This upswing is partly attributed to a more crypto-friendly stance from global leaders. The recent acquisition of Deribit, a crypto options giant, by Coinbase for a substantial $2.9 billion highlights the significant investment taking place in this sector. Robinhood’s acquisition of WonderFi further solidifies this trend, showcasing the growing strategic importance of the Canadian cryptocurrency market and the continued evolution of the global crypto landscape.
