Altcoin Season Could Heat Up in June and Drain Part of Bitcoin’s $2T Market Cap, Analyst Says
Bitcoin’s declining dominance signals a potential altcoin season. The cryptocurrency’s dominance rate, which represents its share of the total crypto market capitalization, has significantly decreased from approximately 65% to 62% within a week. This marks the end of a five-month upward trend and suggests a shift in investor sentiment, with capital potentially flowing from Bitcoin to alternative cryptocurrencies (altcoins).
This shift is accompanied by a rise in the overall crypto market capitalization, increasing from $2.90 trillion to $3.24 trillion during the same period. The divergence between Bitcoin’s declining dominance and the overall market growth strongly indicates increased interest and investment in altcoins.
Joao Wedson, CEO and founder of Alphractal, a crypto data analysis platform, predicts a full-blown altcoin season in June. His proprietary altcoin season index, tracking 57 specific altcoins, reveals that 37 have outperformed Bitcoin over the past 60 days. Wedson anticipates a continued rapid decline in Bitcoin’s dominance in the coming months, suggesting a sustained altcoin rally.
Wedson’s analysis suggests that even if Bitcoin experiences a price correction, most altcoins have likely reached their bottom and are unlikely to fall significantly further. He posits that a portion of Bitcoin’s substantial $2 trillion market capitalization is poised to migrate towards altcoins. He advises investors to carefully analyze altcoins relative to Bitcoin, using BTC pairs (e.g., ETH/BTC or COTI/BTC) for a more nuanced understanding of performance.
However, broader market indicators present a contrasting view. CoinMarketCap’s altcoin index, which encompasses the top 100 cryptocurrencies, remains at 27, suggesting a continued “Bitcoin season” where the leading cryptocurrency dominates market activity. This discrepancy highlights the complexity of predicting market trends and underscores the need for diverse analytical perspectives when assessing investment opportunities in the cryptocurrency market. The contrasting viewpoints underscore the volatility and uncertainty inherent in the crypto market and highlight the importance of cautious and informed decision-making for investors.
