Arthur Hayes Dumps Millions in Crypto Amid Bearish Bet on U.S. Tariff Impact

Arthur Hayes, BitMEX co-founder, recently liquidated significant cryptocurrency holdings, shifting his portfolio towards USDC. Arkham Intelligence data reveals the sale of 2,373 ETH ($8.32 million), 7.76 million ENA ($4.62 million), and 38.86 billion PEPE ($414,700), resulting in USDC now comprising over 80% of his publicly visible $27.9 million holdings. Hayes seemingly confirmed these transactions on X, expressing a bearish outlook for the crypto market.

His pessimism stems from several factors. He cites the impact of President Trump’s recently implemented and upcoming tariffs on key trading partners, coupled with a weaker-than-expected U.S. jobs report, as indicators of insufficient credit expansion to boost nominal GDP. Consequently, he predicts a downturn, forecasting bitcoin to potentially retest $100,000 and ether to revisit $3,000.

This bearish prediction aligns with recent market trends. The CoinDesk 20 (CD20) index experienced a 7.5% decline in the past week as rate cut expectations waned. Bitcoin, while outperforming the broader market with a 3.9% drop, currently sits at $113,500. Ether fared worse, falling 6.5% to $3,500. However, the market’s response to Friday’s weak jobs report suggests renewed hope for rate cuts, with Polymarket traders assigning a 70% probability to a September cut.

Geopolitical tensions further exacerbate the situation. Escalating US-Russia conflict, fueled by Dmitry Medvedev’s threats and Trump’s announcement of nuclear submarine deployments, contributes to market uncertainty.

Despite his current bearish stance and significant sell-off, Hayes’ previous statements reveal a potentially longer-term bullish outlook. Last month, he projected year-end bitcoin and ether prices of $250,000 and $10,000 respectively. The discrepancy between his short-term pessimism and longer-term optimism highlights the volatility and uncertainty inherent within the cryptocurrency market. Hayes’ actions and predictions serve as a compelling case study in the complexities of navigating the crypto space.
