Bitcoin DeFi Project Elastos Debuts BTC-Backed Stablecoin BTCD

Elastos, the creator of the BeL2 protocol, has introduced a novel stablecoin, the bitcoin dollar (BTCD), fully backed by Bitcoin (BTC). This initiative aims to establish a Bitcoin-centric financial system, drawing parallels to the Bretton Woods system, which pegged the U.S. dollar to gold. The project envisions Bitcoin as the new anchor for monetary stability in a decentralized digital environment.

Stablecoins, typically pegged to fiat currencies like the dollar, mitigate the volatility inherent in cryptocurrencies. They enable users to engage in digital asset transactions without the risk of significant price fluctuations. Conventional dollar-pegged stablecoins often utilize short-term U.S. Treasuries for backing, ensuring liquidity.

BTCD, however, takes a unique approach by using Bitcoin as collateral. This counterintuitive strategy is addressed through substantial overcollateralization. Elastos employs a 160%-200% overcollateralization ratio, meaning BTCD is backed by a significantly larger amount of Bitcoin than its face value.

The system leverages oracles to provide the BTC-USD exchange rate for each block. A crucial aspect of BTCD’s stability mechanism involves arbitrage. If the collateral coverage drops to 110%, arbitrageurs can step in, repaying the debt, acquiring Bitcoin at a discount, and eliminating the risk.

A feedback loop further maintains BTCD’s peg. If BTCD trades above one dollar, holders can burn their tokens to redeem Bitcoin, reducing supply and consequently lowering the price. Conversely, if the price dips below one dollar, users can mint new BTCD using Bitcoin, increasing supply and driving the price upward.

This BTC-backed stablecoin represents a significant step toward a Bitcoin-powered DeFi ecosystem. It harnesses the security and extensive reserves of Bitcoin to underpin decentralized financial activities within the broader blockchain landscape. The potential growth of the stablecoin market is substantial, with projections suggesting it could reach $2 trillion by the end of 2028, according to Standard Chartered. BTCD’s innovative approach could play a significant role in this expansion.
