Bitcoin Rebounds After Galaxy Completes Sale of $9B BTC From Satoshi-Era Whale
Bitcoin’s recent price fluctuation saw a significant rebound on Friday, recovering from an overnight dip below $115,000 to its familiar trading range of the past two weeks. While trading at approximately $117,200, it still reflected a 1.2% decrease over the preceding 24 hours. This dip coincided with a substantial movement of Bitcoin by asset manager Galaxy Digital, transferring a large quantity to exchanges. This action is believed to be linked to a significant Bitcoin holder (“whale”) who had previously transferred approximately $9 billion worth of Bitcoin to trading desks earlier in the month.
The Bitcoin, held in dormant wallets since the cryptocurrency’s early years, was finally moved after more than a decade of inactivity. Galaxy Digital subsequently confirmed the completion of the sale of all 80,000 BTC on behalf of a client, highlighting it as one of the largest Bitcoin transactions in crypto history. The firm clarified that this sale was strategically executed as part of the investor’s estate planning.
Following this significant sell-off, market analysts are offering differing perspectives. The removal of this substantial selling pressure has led some to believe that the recent price lows may represent a bottom or near-bottom. John Glover, Chief Investment Officer of crypto lender Ledn, anticipates a local bottom to form either on Friday or over the weekend, paving the way for a renewed upward trend towards new record highs. Glover’s analysis, based on the Elliott Wave Principle, projects a rally to approximately $132,000 to complete what he terms “wave iii.” This optimistic outlook suggests that the recent sell-off, although significant, might represent a temporary setback in Bitcoin’s overall upward trajectory. The market remains keenly focused on whether this prediction will materialize, and whether the current price stability will hold. The event highlights the impact of large-scale transactions on Bitcoin’s price volatility and the ongoing interplay between market sentiment, technical analysis, and large institutional investors’ actions. Further analysis of market behavior will be necessary to gauge the long-term implications of this significant event.
