Bitcoin’s ‘Mempool’ Nearly Empty as Prices Trade Near Lifetime Highs
Bitcoin’s price is near record highs, yet on-chain activity remains surprisingly low, a stark contrast suggesting a disconnect between price and actual network usage. This observation is based on analysis of the mempool, the holding area for unconfirmed transactions awaiting inclusion in a block by miners. Data from Blockchain.com reveals a significantly reduced number of pending transactions. While the mempool currently holds approximately 15,000 transactions, this is drastically lower than the 150,000 seen when Bitcoin’s price first surpassed $100,000 in late 2024. Since March 2025, the number of pending transactions has fluctuated between a mere 3,000 and 30,000, indicating weak demand for the network despite the sustained high price of BTC.
This low level of activity raises concerns about the health of the Bitcoin network. Joël Valenzuela, director of marketing and business development, highlights the near-emptiness of the mempool and the minimal contribution of transaction fees to miner revenue. He contends that this indicates a significant exodus of individual users, despite the all-time high price. Valenzuela warns of a potential crisis, suggesting the network could face bankruptcy or become a centrally controlled asset managed by governments and institutions. This assessment highlights a critical vulnerability: a high price not reflected in organic network usage.
Joao Wedson, CEO and founder of Alphractal, offers a different perspective, linking the low mempool activity to a lack of retail investor participation. He posits that a rise in mempool transactions would signal a return of retail investors, as a growing backlog reflects increased demand for network usage. Wedson’s analysis points to a potential market imbalance, where institutional investors might be driving the price upward while retail participation lags behind. The disparity between Bitcoin’s price and its on-chain activity raises crucial questions regarding the long-term sustainability and decentralized nature of the network. The lack of significant retail involvement raises concerns about the robustness and future trajectory of the Bitcoin ecosystem. Further observation and analysis are needed to ascertain the full implications of this trend.
