Bitfinex Securities Is Taking a Different Approach to RWAs, Launches Two New Products in the UK
Bitfinex Securities is challenging the current trajectory of blockchain-based Real World Assets (RWAs), which is largely dominated by major financial institutions managing substantial tokenized assets. The company’s latest move underscores its commitment to democratizing finance through tokenized equity offerings.
Two new alternative finance products, launched in the UK, exemplify this approach. TITAN1, a £5 million ($6.8 million) investment in subordinate debt issued by Castle Community Bank, aims to support lending to financially excluded customers in Edinburgh. This offers investors a 20% annual dividend (net of fees), paid quarterly for up to 10 years, with a five-year non-callable period.
TITAN2 represents a £100 million ($136 million) investment in litigation finance related to mis-sold car finance claims in the UK, a market with significant potential for compensation payouts. Investors receive 50% of the claims recovery proceeds, distributed proportionately. Both TITAN1 and TITAN2 are accessible as tradable tokens on Bitfinex Securities’ secondary market, issued on Blockstream’s Liquid Network, a Bitcoin sidechain. This ensures compliance through a whitelist system and issuer authorization for transfers.
Bitfinex Securities’ history with tokenized RWAs predates the current institutional trend. The firm’s previous ventures included a tokenized Bitcoin mining hashrate contract and tokenized U.S. Treasuries, the first such offering in El Salvador, making these investments accessible to a wider range of individuals and organizations.
Jesse Knutson, Head of Operations at Bitfinex Securities, highlights the firm’s focus on bridging the capital access gap left by traditional banking systems. He notes a bias towards fixed income in the current RWA ecosystem, with a concentration on money market funds and a lack of trading activity. Knutson emphasizes the importance of disintermediation, a factor he believes is often overlooked by institutional players who maintain reliance on traditional financial infrastructure. Bitfinex Securities’ approach aims to streamline the process, utilizing blockchain technology to remove unnecessary intermediaries.
