BlackRock iShares Bitcoin ETF Surges Past 700K BTC in Record-Breaking Run
BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) has achieved a remarkable milestone, accumulating 700,000 Bitcoin (BTC) in just 18 months. This surpasses the holdings of prominent companies like MicroStrategy (MSTR), which began its Bitcoin acquisition in 2020, and significantly outpaces Fidelity’s FBTC and Grayscale’s GBTC. The trust’s assets under management (AUM) have skyrocketed to $76 billion, a figure that overshadows even BlackRock’s iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV) and iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM), which track large-cap and small-cap U.S. equities, respectively.
This rapid growth underscores the immense success of Bitcoin ETFs since their U.S. debut in January 2024. The unprecedented influx of capital into these funds, totaling $50 billion in net inflows, positions them as the most successful ETF launches in history. IBIT’s performance is particularly noteworthy, as it has swiftly become BlackRock’s third highest revenue-generating ETF among its extensive portfolio of 1,197 funds. This achievement reflects the surging institutional interest in Bitcoin and the increasing mainstream adoption of cryptocurrencies as an asset class.
The sheer scale of IBIT’s holdings, exceeding those of established players in the space, is a testament to the trust’s ability to attract substantial investment. Nate Geraci, president of The ETF Store, aptly described the milestone as “ridiculous,” highlighting the extraordinary pace of growth. Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas’s observation that BlackRock manages a vast array of funds further emphasizes the significance of IBIT’s remarkable performance within that context. The rapid accumulation of Bitcoin by IBIT, along with the success of other Bitcoin ETFs, strongly suggests a sustained bullish trend in the cryptocurrency market. The event marks a significant turning point for Bitcoin’s institutional acceptance and mainstream integration within the financial landscape.
