Brazilian Firm Meliuz’s Shares Fall After Planning to Raise $32.4M to Buy Bitcoin

Brazilian fintech company Meliuz (CASH3) is raising capital to bolster its Bitcoin holdings. The company filed plans to raise R$180.08 million (approximately $32.4 million) through an equity offering, specifically to purchase Bitcoin. This move underscores Meliuz’s strategic pivot towards Bitcoin as a core asset.

The offering, priced at R$7.06 ($1.27) per share, represents a slight discount of about 5% compared to Meliuz’s closing price of R$7.43 on the previous trading day. Market reaction has been somewhat negative, with the stock experiencing a decline of over 5% in current trading. BTG Pactual is acting as the book-runner for this equity offering.

This capital raise builds upon Meliuz’s earlier announcement of a plan to raise $78 million in equity to establish itself as Brazil’s first Bitcoin treasury company. This ambitious goal demonstrates a strong commitment to Bitcoin as a strategic investment and a potential driver of future growth.

Meliuz, which claims the title of the third fastest-growing shopping app in Brazil, possesses a significant user base. As of the first quarter of this year, the company reported approximately 41 million loyal users, a testament to its success in the Brazilian fintech market. This substantial user base could provide a foundation for future Bitcoin adoption initiatives.

The current market capitalization of Meliuz stands at approximately R$647.08 million ($116.5 million), according to TradingView data. This figure reflects the market’s valuation of the company and its potential for growth in the context of its Bitcoin-focused strategy. The successful completion of this capital raise will significantly increase Meliuz’s Bitcoin holdings, positioning the company as a prominent player in the intersection of fintech and cryptocurrency in Brazil. The market’s reaction to this move will be closely watched as an indicator of investor sentiment towards this emerging strategy. The strategic decision to prioritize Bitcoin investment underscores a belief in Bitcoin’s long-term potential and its role in shaping the future of finance.
