Cardano Foundation Increased Spending on Core Areas by 15% Last Year

The Cardano Foundation, a non-profit supporting the Cardano network, reported a 15% increase in spending in 2024, reaching $22.1 million. This funding was strategically allocated across three core areas: adoption, operational resilience, and education. The report, publicly accessible via the Foundation’s Reeve tool, details a significant rise in assets, reaching $659.1 million, primarily driven by increased cryptocurrency valuations. Bitcoin (BTC), now comprising approximately 15% of the Foundation’s holdings, experienced a remarkable 120% price increase in 2024, while Cardano (ADA) saw a 42% rise. Despite this, ADA’s share of the Foundation’s assets decreased from 83% to 77%.

The Foundation’s primary revenue stream stems from staking rewards, yielding 17.1 million ADA from its 599.2 million ADA holdings—a 2.7% return. The Foundation emphasizes a responsible staking strategy, prioritizing pools that actively contribute to the Cardano ecosystem, reinforcing its commitment to the network’s decentralized structure.

A substantial portion of the budget, over $15 million, was dedicated to adoption initiatives. These efforts involved collaborations with prominent organizations such as NASA, FC Barcelona, and the United Nations Development Programme, focusing on expanding Cardano’s real-world applications and demonstrating its versatility across diverse sectors.

Operational resilience received $3.8 million in funding. Key investments included the launch of the open-source Cardano.org platform, designed to enhance user experience and community engagement, and the integration of the Inter-Blockchain Communication Protocol (IBC), enabling seamless communication with over 115 other blockchains. This expansion significantly broadens Cardano’s interoperability and potential for growth within the broader blockchain ecosystem. By year-end, the Foundation employed over 100 individuals.

Frederik Gregaard, CEO of the Cardano Foundation, highlighted the importance of transparency, stating that sharing both achievements and resource allocation is crucial for building trust and ensuring long-term success within the open-source Cardano ecosystem. This commitment to open communication underscores the Foundation’s dedication to fostering a sustainable and thriving Cardano network.
