China Warns Worldcoin-Style Iris Scanning a National Security Threat
China’s Ministry of State Security (MSS) has issued a stark warning about the national security risks associated with the misuse of biometric data, specifically targeting foreign companies that incentivize iris scans using cryptocurrency. This thinly veiled reference to Worldcoin, the crypto project co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, appeared in a post on the MSS’s official WeChat account.
The MSS detailed a scenario where a foreign firm offered cryptocurrency tokens in exchange for users’ iris scans globally. Subsequently, this biometric data was transferred internationally, raising significant concerns regarding both individual privacy and national security. Although the company wasn’t explicitly named, the description strongly suggests Worldcoin, whose controversial practice of exchanging tokens for iris scans aims to create a global identity network.
This isn’t the first regulatory hurdle for Worldcoin. Previous reports from CoinDesk highlighted regulatory pushback in Germany, France, and Kenya, primarily focusing on concerns about informed consent, data storage security, and the potential for mass surveillance. The MSS advisory expands on these concerns, citing additional instances where stolen facial data was allegedly exploited by foreign intelligence agencies to create deepfakes. These deepfakes were then reportedly used to facilitate infiltration of secure locations, further emphasizing the gravity of the biometric data security issue.
The MSS’s statement underscores a growing global apprehension surrounding the ethical and security implications of large-scale biometric data collection. The potential for misuse, whether for commercial exploitation or state-sponsored espionage, is a significant concern. Worldcoin’s business model, which directly involves the collection and international transfer of sensitive biometric data, places it squarely at the center of this debate. The Chinese government’s warning serves as a potent reminder of the potential consequences of neglecting data privacy and security in the rapidly evolving landscape of biometric technology and cryptocurrency. The current price of Worldcoin’s WLD token stands at $0.93, reflecting a 4% decrease according to CoinDesk market data. This price drop may be partly influenced by the ongoing regulatory scrutiny and negative press surrounding the project. The situation highlights the delicate balance between technological innovation and the critical need for robust data protection measures.
