Digital Asset, Builder of Privacy-Focused Blockchain Canton, Raises $135M
Digital Asset, the creator of the privacy-centric Canton Network blockchain, secured $135 million in a strategic funding round. This significant investment was spearheaded by DRW Venture Capital and Tradeweb Markets, and included participation from a diverse group of prominent financial institutions. The investor list boasts a mix of traditional finance giants and established crypto players, including BNP Paribas, Circle Ventures, Citadel Securities, DTCC, Virtu Financial, and Paxos.
The funding round underscores the growing demand for privacy-preserving blockchain solutions within the enterprise sector. For over a decade, privacy has been a paramount concern for organizations, especially banks and large financial institutions, seeking to leverage blockchain technology. Canton Network addresses this directly, offering configurable privacy settings that cater to diverse needs.
A key differentiator of Canton Network is its flexible approach to privacy. CEO Yuval Rooz explains that while all participants can connect to the network, issuers maintain control over the privacy settings of their assets. This allows for assets with varying levels of privacy to coexist on the same platform. Assets could range from entirely public, resembling Ethereum’s structure, to completely private, their existence unknown to external parties. This unique functionality allows for seamless transactions involving assets with different privacy configurations.
The influx of capital will accelerate the expansion of real-world assets (RWAs) on Canton. Currently, the network supports a wide range of asset classes, including bonds, money market funds, alternative funds, commodities, repurchase agreements (repos), mortgages, life insurance, and annuities.
Don Wilson, founder and CEO of DRW, highlights the significance of this investment, stating it provides substantial momentum for Digital Asset and positions Canton Network as the leading protocol for global collateral mobility. With trillions of dollars in RWAs already utilizing the Canton blockchain, this funding round significantly strengthens its position in the market and demonstrates the strong confidence major players have in its future. The investment signifies a crucial step toward broader adoption of blockchain technology within the financial industry, driven by the increasing demand for secure and private transactions.
