DOJ Ties Kansas Bank Collapse to $225 Million ‘Pig Butchering’ Seizure
A significant Department of Justice (DOJ) action has targeted a massive cryptocurrency laundering operation, seizing over $225 million in USDT. This operation, linked to a Philippines-based call center, ITECHNO Specialist Inc., involved a complex scheme where funds were routed through numerous intermediary wallets to obscure their origin. The laundering network processed approximately $3 billion in transactions, affecting 434 victims with identified losses exceeding $19.4 million.
Central to this case is Shan Hanes, the former CEO of Heartland Tri-State Bank. Hanes embezzled $47 million from the bank between May and July 2023, triggering its collapse. A significant portion of these stolen funds—$3.3 million—was traced to the laundering operation, highlighting Hanes’s role as both perpetrator and victim. His actions, which included diverting funds to a crypto wallet, depleted the bank’s liquidity, forcing regulators to shut it down. Hanes’s fraudulent activities extended beyond the bank; he also targeted other organizations and even his daughter’s college fund, channeling money to the same “pig butchering” scam. He was subsequently sentenced to 24 years in prison.
The DOJ’s investigation leveraged crucial information provided by OKX, a cryptocurrency exchange, which helped identify the intricate network of accounts used in the laundering scheme. The scammers directed victims to deposit USDT into 93 scam-controlled addresses, then shuffled the funds through numerous intermediary wallets and ultimately into 22 primary OKX accounts before further dispersion. The coordinated behavior, shared IP addresses, and reused KYC documents linked the activity to ITECHNO Specialist Inc.
The seized USDT will likely contribute to a planned government cryptocurrency stockpile, though details of this initiative remain unclear. The long-term implications for victims remain uncertain, given that only a fraction of those affected have been identified so far. This case underscores the growing challenge posed by cryptocurrency-related crimes and the importance of international cooperation in combating them. The involvement of a major cryptocurrency exchange in the investigation also highlights the evolving role of these platforms in law enforcement efforts.
