Eight Bitcoin Wallets Move 80,000 BTC in Largest Ever ‘Satoshi Era’ Transfers
A significant event in the cryptocurrency market occurred on Friday with the movement of over $8 billion worth of Bitcoin, originating from the network’s earliest days—the “Satoshi era.” This represents the largest transfer of Satoshi-era Bitcoin ever recorded.
Two wallets, dormant for over 14 years, each transferred 10,000 BTC to new addresses. These wallets initially received their coins on April 3, 2011, when Bitcoin’s value was a mere 78 cents. At current prices, the BTC in each wallet is worth over $1.1 billion, signifying an astounding appreciation of more than 13.9 million percent.
The original source was wallet “1HqXB…gDwcK,” which in 2011 distributed 23,377.83 BTC across three different wallets. Two of these, “12tLs…xj2me” and “1KbrS…AWJYm,” held the majority until this week’s transfers. The third wallet, receiving 3,377 BTC, had already spent its holdings in 2011.
Adding to the scale of this event, on-chain analysis firm Arkham Intelligence later identified six additional wallets moving over 10,000 BTC in rapid succession, totaling over $8.6 billion. Arkham suggests a single entity controls all these wallets, though no individual or organization has publicly claimed ownership.
The transferred Bitcoin was sent to new wallets utilizing a modern, lower-fee address format. Crucially, neither of the new wallets has subsequently moved the funds, leaving the identity of the owner unknown.
The moved Bitcoin belongs to a rare category: coins mined or transacted during the Satoshi era (roughly 2009-2011), when Bitcoin’s creator was still actively online. Wallets from this period are highly valued and closely monitored by traders. Large-scale movements like this are significant, potentially indicating a shift in perspective from early adopters or miners. The lack of immediate follow-up transactions adds to the mystery surrounding this massive Bitcoin transfer. The event underscores the enduring intrigue and volatility inherent in the cryptocurrency market.
