Ether, Solana, and Other Majors Could Further Slide as Trump Threatens Iran Strikes
Cryptocurrency markets experienced a downturn on Thursday, mirroring broader market anxieties fueled by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and persistent inflationary pressures. The strengthening dollar further exacerbated the decline, impacting major cryptocurrencies like XRP, Cardano’s ADA, and Solana’s SOL, each experiencing losses exceeding 1% within the past 24 hours. Dogecoin, while flat for the day, saw a significant weekly decline of over 10%, erasing its early June gains. Ether also retreated, losing 0.7% and reversing all its earlier week’s progress.
This market volatility coincided with continued inflows into Bitcoin spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the United States. Data reveals over $389 million in new investments on Wednesday alone, with Ether spot ETFs attracting an additional $19 million. The confluence of factors driving this trend includes escalating geopolitical risks, primarily stemming from the potential for direct US military action against Iran, and the Federal Reserve’s signaling of a more enduring inflationary outlook.
Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s statement on Wednesday highlighted the potential impact of tariffs and global conflict on inflation control. While the Fed maintained its current interest rate, Powell emphasized that the cost of tariffs would ultimately be borne by consumers, underscoring the need for further economic data before considering rate cuts. This cautious stance, coupled with the heightened uncertainty, created a risk-off sentiment across financial markets.
Altcoins, generally perceived as higher-risk assets, bore the brunt of the sell-off, a characteristic response during periods of macroeconomic stress. Bitcoin, despite its year-to-date 13% increase fueled by ETF inflows and dollar weakness, demonstrated an indecisive performance this week, failing to establish itself definitively as either a safe haven or a risk asset. This lack of clear market positioning is described by FxPro analyst Alex Kuptsikevich as Bitcoin being “stuck between two worlds,” neither responding to heightened risk appetite nor mirroring gold’s typical behavior during periods of geopolitical turmoil. The continued range-bound nature of Bitcoin underscores the prevailing uncertainty in the market.
