Ethereum Touted as ‘Foundational Layer for Global Finance’ by Firm With $500M ETH Bet
SharpLink Gaming, Inc. (SBET), a Minneapolis-based online performance marketing company specializing in sports betting and iGaming, has become the first publicly listed company to adopt Ether (ETH) as its primary treasury reserve asset. This strategic move, announced July 4th, 2025, involves accumulating, staking, and leveraging ETH to enhance long-term shareholder value. The company’s comprehensive treasury strategy actively utilizes ETH through native staking, restaking, and Ethereum-based yield strategies.
SharpLink highlights ETH’s advantages: productivity via staking rewards, composability within decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols, scarcity, security, and alignment with future internet infrastructure. This approach integrates DeFi principles into corporate finance, representing a significant shift from traditional treasury management.
This strategic pivot began with a $425 million private placement led by Consensys, completed May 27th, to fund ETH acquisition. Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin joined SharpLink’s Board as Chairman. Between May 30th and June 12th, SharpLink acquired approximately 176,271 ETH for roughly $463 million. Further acquisitions between June 16th and 20th added 12,207 ETH, partially funded by ATM equity sales. By June 24th, SharpLink held 188,478 ETH, all deployed in staking solutions. By July 1st, holdings reached 198,478 ETH, generating over 220 ETH in staking rewards.
Lubin emphasizes this strategy embodies technological progress and institutional trust, positioning SharpLink to lead digital commerce evolution. CEO Rob Phythian highlights the upcoming Nasdaq closing bell ceremony (July 7th, 2025) as symbolic of this new chapter, demonstrating the coexistence of digital assets with public market discipline and corporate governance.
SharpLink’s strategy uniquely positions the company at the intersection of sports betting, blockchain technology, and DeFi, offering investors regulated and transparent exposure to Ethereum’s growth potential. At the time of writing, ETH trades at approximately $2,505, up 0.56% in the past 24 hours (CoinDesk Research). The broader crypto market, as measured by the CoinDesk 20 Index, is up 0.34%. Recent technical analysis shows ETH exhibiting a bullish structure with strong support levels.
