EToro Plans to Tokenize U.S. Stocks on Ethereum in Blockchain Push
eToro, a prominent digital trading platform, announced its intention to tokenize U.S.-listed equities on the Ethereum blockchain. This initiative positions eToro alongside other trading platforms embracing blockchain-based marketplaces, signifying a significant shift in the financial technology landscape.
The core of eToro’s strategy involves creating ERC-20 tokens that mirror the underlying shares held within their system. These tokens will be fully redeemable for traditional stock holdings, ensuring seamless integration with existing financial mechanisms. The company explicitly aims to enhance the accessibility and liquidity of equities by enabling on-chain trading and compatibility with decentralized finance (DeFi) applications. This move promises to unlock around-the-clock market access for investors, a significant departure from traditional market hours.
CEO Yoni Assia emphasized the company’s broader vision: tokenizing all assets available on eToro, starting with stocks. This long-term objective seeks to seamlessly integrate tokenized assets into the broader DeFi ecosystem, unlocking new possibilities for investors. Assia highlighted the evolving regulatory landscape, citing the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation and the U.S. stablecoin-focused Genius Act as catalysts for this initiative. He argued that these regulations create a supportive environment for the tokenization of real-world assets, fostering the development of legally sound and regulated digital assets.
This move by eToro is not an isolated incident; it reflects a growing trend in the financial industry. Competitors such as Robinhood have already launched similar tokenized stock offerings, primarily targeting European markets. Major cryptocurrency exchanges, including Kraken, Gemini, and Bybit, have also integrated tokenized equities into their platforms. eToro’s entry into this market builds on its prior experience in tokenization, notably through the acquisition of Danish tokenization startup Firmo in 2019 and the subsequent launch of tokenized gold and silver offerings. The company’s strategic move underscores the increasing convergence of traditional finance and decentralized technologies, promising a future where digital assets play a central role in global markets.
