Christopher Wong, a former Supervisory Special Agent with the FBI and a prominent figure in the agency’s cryptocurrency investigations, has joined TRM Labs, a blockchain intelligence firm. His appointment signifies a significant addition to TRM Labs’ capabilities in combating cryptocurrency-related crime.

Ari Redbord, TRM Labs’ global head of policy, praised Wong’s talent and experience, highlighting his contributions to elite investigative teams throughout his career. Wong’s decade-long tenure at the FBI involved high-profile cases that significantly shaped the landscape of cryptocurrency crime investigations.

One of his most notable achievements was co-leading the investigation into the 2016 Bitfinex hack, which resulted in the largest cryptocurrency seizure in U.S. history, amounting to $3.6 billion. This case showcased his expertise in tracking and recovering stolen cryptocurrency.

He also played a crucial role in the investigation of the $600 million Axie Infinity Ronin Bridge breach, linked to North Korea’s Lazarus Group. This investigation led to the first U.S. sanctions on cryptocurrency mixing services, demonstrating Wong’s influence on U.S. agency responses to cyber threats involving cryptocurrencies.

Furthermore, Wong was instrumental in tracking $7.7 million in cryptocurrency linked to North Korea’s IT worker laundering schemes. His work uncovered how North Korean operatives used falsified identities to infiltrate the global tech industry and funnel funds back to Pyongyang. This highlights his skills in uncovering complex money laundering operations involving cryptocurrency.

In his new role as a global investigator at TRM Labs, Wong will leverage his extensive experience to assist clients and partners in disrupting criminal activities within the cryptocurrency ecosystem. His expertise will undoubtedly strengthen TRM Labs’ ability to combat illicit cryptocurrency transactions and enhance the security of the blockchain space. Redbord expressed enthusiasm about the knowledge and experience Wong will bring to the team, underscoring the significance of this appointment for the firm and the broader fight against cryptocurrency crime.
