Finance Firm Mill City Ventures to Buy $441M in SUI Tokens, Pivoting to Crypto Treasury Strategy
Mill City Ventures III, a publicly traded specialty finance firm, is dramatically shifting its focus to cryptocurrency. This transformation centers on a significant $450 million private placement, primarily dedicated to acquiring SUI, the native cryptocurrency of the Sui blockchain. The firm intends to allocate approximately 98% of these funds to purchasing SUI, leveraging both open market transactions and direct agreements with the Sui Foundation. This strategic move will establish SUI as Mill City’s principal treasury asset, a bold step for a publicly traded company. The remaining 2% of the funding will support the firm’s existing short-term lending activities.
This represents one of the largest SUI allocations to date, effectively tying Mill City’s financial performance directly to the success of the Sui blockchain. Sui is designed for high-throughput applications, targeting sectors such as payments, gaming, and crucially, AI infrastructure. This strategic investment highlights the growing interest in blockchain technology’s potential across various industries.
The funding round was spearheaded by Karatage Opportunities, a prominent digital asset hedge fund, in collaboration with the Sui Foundation. This partnership signals a significant vote of confidence in both SUI and Mill City’s new direction. Marius Barnett and Stephen Mackintosh, experienced leaders in the field, will assume key leadership positions at Mill City, serving as board chairman and chief investment officer, respectively. Their expertise will be instrumental in guiding the firm’s transition and maximizing the potential of this substantial investment.
This restructuring positions Mill City as a unique public vehicle for institutional investors seeking exposure to SUI, a novel approach within the traditional financial sector. The arrangement includes a collaborative strategy with the Sui Foundation, providing Mill City with valuable insights into the Sui ecosystem. The deal, expected to conclude by the end of July, will solidify Mill City’s position as a pioneer among publicly listed U.S. firms embracing a blockchain-native treasury strategy on such a large scale. While SUI experienced a minor 1.7% dip in the past 24 hours, this strategic move represents a significant bet on the long-term growth potential of the Sui blockchain and its native cryptocurrency.
