France Charges 25 People, Including 6 Minors, in Crypto Kidnapping Cases

French authorities have charged 25 individuals, including six minors, in connection with a series of cryptocurrency-related kidnappings in Paris. The investigation centers on the May 13th attempted kidnapping of the daughter and grandson of Paymium CEO Pierre Noizat. This incident, along with other unsuccessful attempts, including a prior targeting of Noizat’s family and a thwarted abduction near Nantes, prompted a significant law enforcement response.

The arrests follow a concerning trend of high-profile crypto kidnappings in France this year. Notable cases include the May kidnapping of a French crypto millionaire’s father and the earlier abduction of Ledger co-founder David Ballard and his wife, both of whom suffered finger amputations used as leverage for ransom payments. These events led to a meeting between French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau and cryptocurrency stakeholders to address security concerns within the industry.

The suspects in the May 13th case range in age from 16 to 23, with six being minors. Their nationalities are primarily French, with additional suspects from Senegal, Angola, and Russia. According to a lawyer defending one of the suspects, the young individuals were allegedly enticed by financial incentives and subsequently became entangled in a situation beyond their comprehension.

A source close to the investigation suggests the suspects acted as hired muscle, contracted by a Southeast Asian criminal organization for relatively modest compensation—as little as $10,000 per operation. Currently, 18 individuals are in pre-trial detention, three have requested a deferred hearing, and four are under judicial supervision.

While France has been a focal point for these crimes, similar incidents are escalating globally, including several recent cases in the United States. The scale and organization of these kidnappings highlight a significant security risk within the cryptocurrency sector, demanding further investigation and preventative measures. The involvement of minors underscores the need for public awareness and educational initiatives to prevent vulnerable individuals from becoming involved in such criminal activities. The relatively low payment to the perpetrators suggests a larger criminal network operating behind the scenes, warranting a more expansive investigation into the broader criminal infrastructure.
