Just like Inspector Gadget himself, the latest iteration of this eponymous IP is a cyborg, mixing high-tech and human elements to create a totally unique being.
California-based publisher Gamisodes has announced the upcoming release of a new collection of “gamified” episodes based on the first season (65 x 22 minutes) of classic animated series Inspector Gadget.
This marks Gamisodes’ first-ever licensing deal, which it signed with Canada’s WildBrain, owner of the Inspector Gadget IP.  The NFT activation will be executed in partnership with Vancouver-based Dapper Labs.
Bridging nostalgia and interactivity, Gamisodes CEO Davis Brimer tells Kidscreen that his platform, slated to launch in early 2023, aims to revitalize and repurpose classic TV content for fans.
“It’s so much more than a choose-your-own-adventure style of interactivity,” he says. The upcoming Inspector Gadget gamisodes will be built on the same storylines from the series that fans are familiar with, but with new interactive moments added in.
For example, scenes in which lead characters Penny and Brain help Inspector Gadget out of a conundrum will be “gamified” so that they break the fourth wall and turn to the viewer for help. “Now you are the hero of the show working side by side with your favorite characters,” Brimer says.
The game will initially be available to play on the web through the Gamisodes site before it eventually rolls out on other platforms. It’s aiming for a co-viewing/co-playing audience, a decision made possible by the multi-generational appeal of Inspector Gadget, says Brimer.
Gamisodes is also launching a range of collectible NFT cards (pictured) to accompany the game. While the cards are set to drop in August, a limited number of them will be available for free from July 21 onward, coinciding with San Diego Comic-Con International. They provide VIP perks and can also be used in-game for claiming items, leveling up and more.
Bringing interactivity to classic series isn’t just about repurposing old content; it’s also a step towards creating a new genre of content that producers should be exploring, Brimer says.
“Traditionally, one might think of linear entertainment and interactive entertainment as being two separate categories. We’re really excited to be announcing what we believe to be an entirely new media category where there really is no distinction between the two,” he says. “It is truly interactive entertainment as gamified episodes—and we think that’s the future.”
