Germany’s Public Savings Bank Network Sparkassen to Offer Bitcoin Trading to Clients: Report

Sparkassen, Germany’s extensive network of savings banks, is set to introduce cryptocurrency trading services to its private clients by summer 2026. This significant development, reported by Bloomberg, marks a considerable shift in the traditional banking sector’s approach to digital assets. Customers will be able to trade cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH), directly through their mobile banking applications. This functionality will be facilitated by DekaBank, Sparkassen’s securities platform.

The decision follows DekaBank’s earlier launch of crypto trading and custody services for institutional clients, highlighting a growing acceptance of digital assets within established financial institutions. This move has the backing of the German Savings Bank Association (DSGV), reflecting a recognition of increasing customer demand and the supportive regulatory framework provided by the European MiCA Regulation.

The DSGV’s endorsement represents a departure from a previous, three-year-old internal recommendation that cautioned against offering crypto trading services. This change in stance, championed by figures like Matthias Diessl, president of the Savings Banks in Bavaria, underscores a broader evolution in the perception of cryptocurrencies within the German banking landscape. Diessl’s advocacy for providing clients with crypto trading options directly challenges the earlier cautious approach.

While embracing crypto trading, the DSGV maintains a cautious stance, classifying digital assets as highly speculative investments. This acknowledgment of inherent risk reflects a balanced approach—adopting the emerging technology while advising customers on its volatility. The partnership with DekaBank, already established in the institutional crypto market, ensures a degree of expertise and infrastructure for this new service offering to Sparkassen’s vast customer base. The impending integration of crypto trading into Sparkassen’s mobile banking app promises to make these services readily accessible to a wide range of retail investors in Germany. The timing, coinciding with the growing maturity of the European regulatory landscape, suggests a strategic move to capitalize on a developing market while managing associated risks responsibly.
