Hut 8 Doubles Bitcoin-Backed Loan With Coinbase to $130M, Locks in Lower Rate
Hut 8, a prominent Bitcoin mining firm, announced a significant expansion of its bitcoin-backed credit facility with Coinbase Credit. The facility, initially at $65 million, has been increased to $130 million, providing Hut 8 with considerably more financial flexibility. This expansion represents a strategic move by Hut 8 to bolster its capital structure and pursue ambitious growth initiatives.
A key improvement in the amended agreement is the shift from a floating interest rate to a fixed rate of 9%. Previously, the interest rate fluctuated between 10.5% and 11.5%, introducing an element of uncertainty into Hut 8’s financial planning. The fixed rate provides greater predictability and stability, allowing for more accurate financial forecasting and budgeting.
The maturity date of the facility has also been extended to July 16, 2026, giving Hut 8 a longer timeframe to utilize the funds and achieve its expansion goals. This extended timeframe reduces the pressure to repay the loan quickly, allowing for a more measured and strategic approach to investment and growth.
The loan’s structure is noteworthy for its innovative use of Bitcoin as collateral. Unlike many traditional loans, this credit facility is secured by Hut 8’s Bitcoin holdings. Crucially, Coinbase, the lender, is prohibited from rehypothecating the collateral, mitigating the risk of counterparty default and protecting Hut 8’s assets. Furthermore, a limited recourse clause offers additional protection to Hut 8, limiting its potential liability in the event of unforeseen circumstances.
Sean Glennan, Hut 8’s chief financial officer, highlighted the facility’s efficiency as a capital source and emphasized the company’s commitment to responsible risk management. The improved terms and strengthened borrower protections underscore Hut 8’s dedication to building a resilient and financially sound operation. The additional $65 million will be allocated to expansion efforts, further strengthening Hut 8’s position within the competitive Bitcoin mining landscape. The positive market reaction, with HUT shares rising by 7.7%, reflects investor confidence in Hut 8’s strategic decision-making and the positive implications of this expanded credit facility. Hut 8’s extensive network of mining and data infrastructure assets across North America, boasting over 1,000 megawatts (MW) of energy capacity, positions the company for continued growth and success.
