Japan’s Answer to Strategy: Metaplanet Initiated With Buy Rating at Benchmark
Metaplanet (3350.T), a Japanese company that has rapidly transformed from a small hotel operator to a leading Bitcoin treasury firm, is attracting significant attention from analysts. Benchmark analyst Mark Palmer initiated coverage with a buy rating and a ¥2,400 price target, representing approximately a 50% upside from the stock’s ¥1,650 closing price. This bullish outlook stems from Metaplanet’s aggressive Bitcoin acquisition strategy, earning it the moniker “Japan’s answer to MSTR” (MicroStrategy).
Palmer highlights Metaplanet’s ambitious “hyper-accumulation” strategy, aiming to amass 210,000 BTC by 2027, equivalent to 1% of Bitcoin’s total supply. This ambitious goal is underpinned by a unique and innovative capital-raising plan designed to thrive in volatile market conditions. The recently unveiled “555 Million Plan” involves issuing 555 million moving strike warrants to raise ¥770 billion ($5.3 billion) over six to ten months, directly fueling further Bitcoin purchases.
Metaplanet’s pivot in April 2024, becoming Japan’s first publicly listed Bitcoin treasury company, provided leveraged Bitcoin exposure to Japanese investors facing tax complexities associated with direct cryptocurrency ownership. This strategic move has yielded extraordinary returns, with the stock experiencing a remarkable 7,742% increase since its transformation. This performance significantly outpaces all other Japanese equities, showcasing the remarkable success of its strategy.
While currently trading at a 5.12x premium to its net asset value (NAV), Palmer argues that the valuation is justifiable given the explosive growth in Metaplanet’s Bitcoin holdings. Since Q3 2024, the company has increased its Bitcoin stack by a staggering 8,655%, significantly outpacing the 263% increase in diluted shares. This impressive growth trajectory reinforces the analyst’s confidence in the company’s future prospects. The stock’s 11% surge in overnight Tokyo trading, closing at ¥1,650, further underscores market enthusiasm. Metaplanet’s ADRs, trading under the symbol MTPLF, closed at $10.36 on Friday. The company’s recent acquisition of 1,005 Bitcoin and the issuance of $208 million in bonds for further BTC purchases further solidify its commitment to this aggressive acquisition strategy.
