Katana Mainnet Goes Live as Pre-Deposits Hit $180M

Katana, a self-described “DeFi-first” layer-2 blockchain, has launched its mainnet following a surge in pre-deposits totaling $180 million. This significant influx of capital occurred within less than a month of Katana’s public unveiling, with DefiLlama data highlighting a dramatic increase from $75 million to $180 million between June 1st and the mainnet launch.

Depositors are rewarded with randomized reward NFTs called Krates and a share of 70 million KAT tokens, Katana’s native cryptocurrency. Yield farming opportunities are immediately available upon launch, allowing users to earn more KAT by staking on decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms such as Morpho and Sushi.

Katana directly addresses a critical challenge within the DeFi ecosystem: liquidity constraints. Insufficient liquidity contributes to several problems, including price slippage, inefficient pricing mechanisms, and unsustainable yield returns. Katana employs innovative solutions to mitigate these issues.

One key mechanism is VaultBridge, a product designed to facilitate yield generation on assets deposited on Ethereum. Furthermore, Katana utilizes chain-owned liquidity (CoL), a strategy that enables the blockchain to retain 100% of net sequencer fees and transform them into liquidity reserves. This ensures a robust and sustainable liquidity pool.

According to Marc Boiron, co-contributor of Katana, the project represents “the endgame for how blockchains create value in DeFi.” The mainnet launch is accompanied by compelling yield farming incentives, including token rewards for liquidity providers on Morpho and Sushi.

While built on Ethereum, Katana’s design is blockchain-agnostic, enabling users to generate yield across various networks. This interoperability is achieved through a collaboration with Jito, a liquid staking protocol, allowing users to participate in yield farming on blockchains like Solana. Katana’s innovative approach and robust funding position it as a significant player in the evolving DeFi landscape.
