‘Oi mate, you got a license for that?’ Football icon Michael Owen has had to remove Twitter posts on an unlicensed crypto casino, and an NFT.
The former striker for Liverpool, Manchester United, Newcastle United, Real Madrid, Stoke City and the England national team retired in 2013 but is a regular commentator on the sports scene – and is now backing cryptocurrency and blockchain tech.
The crypto casino in question – Punt Casino – has pushed back stating they are a licensed and registered casino in Curacao.
Cryptoassets are a highly volatile unregulated investment product.
Under UK law, only UK Gambling Commission licensed casinos, sportsbooks and other betting sites can legally advertise to customers in the United Kingdom. Which includes any form of Bitcoin gambling sites, an increasingly popular form of entertainment.
Michael Owen being UK based and promoting Punt Casino on Twitter caught the attention of regulators – and the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) also took issue with his statement that a non-fungible token (NFT) collection could be ‘the first-ever NFTs that can’t lose their initial value’.
Popular Bitcoin casino Punt Casino stated:
‘Punt Casino is a fully licensed Curacao casino operating under the rules and regulations associated with that license. We do not target or promote our casino to customers of any countries and/or jurisdictions not allowed by such license.
Punt Casino has quickly become a strong player in the crypto casino scene with its super-powered giveaways and outstanding online casino platform. Punt Casino takes its responsibilities as a legitimate and licensed casino operator very seriously.’
Michael Owen has previously promoted other UK licensed betting sites such as Bet365, Ladbrokes, and William Hill, with gambling a popular pastime among football. Punt Casino however is yet to be licensed there.
A recent US survey also found sports fans are more likely to hold crypto assets and NFTs.
The football legend stated in a press release:
