PayPal Expands Crypto Payments for U.S. Merchants to Cut Cross-Border Fees

PayPal is significantly expanding its cryptocurrency offerings for U.S. merchants with the launch of “Pay with Crypto.” This new service allows businesses to accept over 100 different cryptocurrencies, encompassing approximately 90% of the total cryptocurrency market capitalization. This includes major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH), along with altcoins and stablecoins such as XRP, USDC, and USDT.

The key advantage for merchants is the streamlined and cost-effective processing of international transactions. Customers can pay using popular crypto wallets like MetaMask and Coinbase, while merchants receive payment in U.S. dollars almost instantly. PayPal’s service fee is a competitive 0.99%, significantly lower than traditional international credit card processing fees, which often exceed 10%. This reduction in fees directly contributes to increased profit margins for businesses.

PayPal highlights the potential for global growth facilitated by this service. The example of a Guatemalan shopper purchasing from an Oklahoma City merchant illustrates how “Pay with Crypto” simplifies cross-border commerce. The ease of integration with PayPal’s existing platform minimizes complexity for businesses of all sizes, regardless of their technical expertise.

This initiative builds upon PayPal’s existing foray into the digital asset space, including its own stablecoin, PYUSD. Merchants can further benefit by earning yield on PYUSD balances held within their PayPal accounts, adding another layer of financial incentive. This integration of PYUSD reinforces PayPal’s commitment to stablecoin technology for efficient and cost-effective cross-border transactions.

The underlying technology leverages the speed and lower costs associated with blockchain rails, particularly stablecoins, presenting a compelling alternative to the traditional banking system for international payments. The near-instantaneous settlement of transactions and reduced fees directly address common pain points for businesses operating in a global marketplace. By offering this comprehensive solution, PayPal aims to significantly impact the landscape of cross-border payments, benefiting both merchants and consumers.
