Project Eleven Raises $6M to Defend Bitcoin From the Coming Quantum Threat
Project Eleven, a company focused on safeguarding Bitcoin from the looming threat of quantum computing, has secured $6 million in funding. This round, co-led by Variant Fund and Quantonation, underscores growing concerns that quantum computers could eventually break Bitcoin’s core cryptography. The funding will enable Project Eleven to develop tools and infrastructure to ensure Bitcoin’s security in a post-quantum world.
The company’s proactive approach contrasts with proposals like QRAMP, which necessitates a potentially difficult hard-fork consensus to migrate to quantum-resistant addresses. Project Eleven’s strategy avoids this hurdle by focusing on individual user preparedness. They emphasize the urgency of linear, proactive defense building, as reactive measures may prove insufficient once the quantum threat materializes.
A key component of Project Eleven’s strategy is the Q-Day Prize, offering 1 BTC to the first team to successfully break Bitcoin’s elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) using a quantum computer. This initiative serves as a benchmark for evaluating the actual threat level and driving research and development efforts.
Central to their approach is Yellowpages, a newly launched post-quantum cryptographic registry. This platform allows users to generate new key pairs using quantum-resistant algorithms, such as lattice-based systems. Users then create a cryptographic proof linking these new keys to their existing Bitcoin addresses, timestamping these proofs on a verifiable ledger. This process, while not altering the Bitcoin blockchain itself, creates a verifiable record of wallet ownership, serving as a crucial backup should ECC eventually be compromised. Yellowpages offers free, audited, and open-source tools for users to proactively establish quantum-resilient ownership.
This approach highlights a shift in the crypto industry towards proactive quantum-resistant solutions. The relatively slow pace of protocol changes in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin necessitates innovative alternatives that bypass lengthy consensus processes to ensure widespread adoption of quantum security measures.
