Russia Creates Registry of Crypto Mining Equipment to Tighten Oversight
Russia’s Ministry of Energy has implemented a national registry for cryptocurrency mining equipment, a significant step towards regulating the burgeoning sector within the country. This initiative aims to identify and subsequently regulate cryptocurrency mining operations, ensuring compliance with newly established tax and regulatory frameworks. The registry, already distributed to regions with substantial mining activity, will enable precise identification of electricity consumption for mining purposes. This detailed tracking is crucial for curbing unlicensed electricity usage and promoting responsible energy consumption within the sector.
Deputy Energy Minister Petr Konyushenko, in a statement to RIA Novosti, emphasized that this registry is integral to the government’s broader strategy of legalizing and regulating cryptocurrency mining. This legalization effort, initiated last year, requires businesses and entrepreneurs involved in mining operations to register with tax authorities. While private citizens are permitted to engage in mining without formal registration, their electricity usage must remain within government-defined limits. Crucially, all miners, regardless of scale, are obligated to report their cryptocurrency production to the tax service.
This move underscores Russia’s evolving approach to the cryptocurrency sector, signifying a transition from a period of ambiguity and uncertainty towards a more regulated and transparent environment. This commitment to regulation is further substantiated by recent developments, such as the announcement by Rostec, the state-owned conglomerate, of plans to introduce a ruble-pegged token called RUBx.
