Semler Scientific Trades at Premium to Bitcoin Holdings for First Time in Three Weeks

Semler Scientific (SMLR) is exhibiting a noteworthy market trend: its stock price has surpassed the value of its Bitcoin holdings for the first time in three weeks. This development, reflected in the company’s market capitalization exceeding the value of its Bitcoin assets, signifies a potential shift in investment strategy.

The key metric used to analyze this situation is the multiple net asset value (mNAV). Currently at 1.149, this figure signifies that SMLR’s market cap of $550 million surpasses the value of its Bitcoin holdings, approximately $477.8 million. This marks a significant change from the situation on June 5th, the last time the mNAV exceeded parity. The mNAV serves as a crucial indicator of whether a company’s market valuation aligns with or deviates from the value of its Bitcoin holdings.

This development holds strategic implications for Semler Scientific. Historically, the company has strategically added to its Bitcoin holdings only when it could acquire more BTC without issuing new shares at a discount. This approach prevents dilution of existing shareholders’ value, a key consideration in their investment strategy. Since June 3rd, no new Bitcoin has been added to their holdings, currently standing at 4,449 BTC. This is significantly below their year-end target of at least 10,000 BTC.

The current mNAV level, however, suggests a market perception of Semler Scientific’s valuation being only marginally higher than the value of its Bitcoin assets. This implies that the market is largely pricing in the potential upside of Bitcoin, potentially overlooking or discounting the contribution of Semler’s core operations in healthcare and biotechnology. This discrepancy suggests that investors are primarily focusing on the potential gains from Bitcoin, which is a strategy that could change if and when Semler adds more Bitcoin to its treasury. The current premium suggests a potential trigger for Semler to increase its Bitcoin holdings, aligning with its past investment patterns.
