SharpLink Gaming Soars 400% as Joseph Lubin’s Consensys Leads $425M Funding for ETH Treasury Strategy
SharpLink (SBET), a Minneapolis-based sports marketing company founded in 1995, experienced a dramatic 412% surge in its share price on Tuesday, closing at $34.45, up from $7 on Friday. This significant increase follows the announcement of a novel corporate strategy: the establishment of an Ethereum (ETH) treasury reserve. The company’s market capitalization has ballooned to $23 million.
This ambitious plan involves a private investment in public equity (PIPE) offering, aiming to raise approximately $425 million. The funds raised will be exclusively allocated to acquiring ETH, which will become the cornerstone of SharpLink’s treasury reserve. The offering is slated to conclude on May 29th.
Consensys, a prominent Ethereum software developer and a company co-founded by Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin, spearheaded the investment round. Other notable participants include Pantera Capital, Galaxy Digital, and Ondo, alongside several smaller investors. A significant development is Lubin’s appointment as the new chairman of SharpLink’s board of directors, effective upon the closing of the offering.
SharpLink’s move reflects a growing trend among micro-cap companies seeking to emulate the remarkable success of MicroStrategy (MSTR). MSTR, a pioneer in adopting a Bitcoin (BTC) treasury strategy, has witnessed an over 3,000% increase in its share price over the past five years. This strategy’s apparent success is driving other companies to explore similar approaches.
Adding to this trend, Trump Media & Technology Group (DJT) also announced a substantial $2.5 billion capital raise on Tuesday. DJT’s aim is to create a Bitcoin treasury, mirroring SharpLink’s and MSTR’s treasury strategies but utilizing Bitcoin instead of Ethereum. Both companies are betting on the long-term potential of cryptocurrencies to bolster their financial positions and enhance shareholder value. The success of these ventures will undoubtedly shape future corporate strategies in the evolving landscape of cryptocurrency integration within traditional finance.
