Square Begins Rollout of Bitcoin Payments for Sellers, Targets Full Availability by 2026

Square, the financial technology company founded by Jack Dorsey, is significantly expanding its integration of Bitcoin payments for its merchant network. This initiative marks a key step in Square’s (now Block’s) broader strategy to promote Bitcoin adoption and utilization within its existing ecosystem.

The rollout, announced by Block executive Owen Jennings via a post on X (formerly Twitter), initially involves onboarding a select group of sellers. These merchants will be enabled to accept Bitcoin payments directly from customers utilizing the Lightning Network, a layer-2 scaling solution designed to drastically improve Bitcoin’s transaction speed and efficiency. A crucial aspect of this implementation is the near-instantaneous settlement of payments. Square facilitates the conversion of Bitcoin payments into fiat currency, thereby streamlining the process for merchants who may not wish to hold Bitcoin directly.

The company’s commitment to Lightning Network technology is evident. Square views the Lightning Network as crucial to overcoming the historical limitations of Bitcoin’s speed, a factor that has previously hindered its wider adoption as a mainstream payment method. By leveraging Lightning’s micropayment channels, transactions are processed off the main Bitcoin blockchain, resulting in significantly faster and more cost-effective payments. This approach allows for the seamless integration of Bitcoin into existing Square payment infrastructure without compromising speed or efficiency.

This current rollout builds upon a successful pilot program conducted at the Bitcoin 2025 conference in Las Vegas earlier this year. During the conference, attendees were able to use Bitcoin to make purchases via a simple barcode scanning system, providing valuable real-world testing and feedback for the system’s development.

Square’s ambitious goal is to make this Bitcoin payment option available to all merchants using its sales platform by the end of next year. This widespread adoption will likely significantly influence the use of Bitcoin for everyday transactions, thereby contributing to its increased mainstream acceptance and usability. The integration of Bitcoin payments into Square’s extensive merchant network positions the company as a major player in driving the adoption of Bitcoin as a viable and efficient payment method. This move underscores the company’s continued belief in Bitcoin’s long-term potential and its ongoing commitment to innovative payment solutions.
