Standard Chartered-Backed Zodia Custody Starts Safekeeping Tokenized Emeralds
Zodia Custody, a digital asset custodian backed by prominent financial institutions including Standard Chartered and SBI, has announced a partnership with GEMx, a Swiss fintech company specializing in blockchain-based fractional ownership of precious stones. This collaboration centers on the secure custody of tokenized emeralds, marking a significant step in bridging the gap between traditional finance and the blockchain world.
The partnership facilitates access to the emerald market through the EmGemX token. This token represents fractional ownership in a diversified portfolio of high-quality emeralds, providing institutional investors with a novel investment opportunity. The underlying physical emeralds are held in secure vaults and undergo regular, independent appraisals, ensuring transparency and asset verification. This approach offers investors exposure to an asset class with a proven track record of appreciation; emeralds have historically demonstrated an average annual appreciation of approximately 9%.
The tokenization of real-world assets (RWAs) is a rapidly evolving trend, and this partnership exemplifies its potential to transform traditional asset classes. By leveraging blockchain technology, GEMx and Zodia Custody are streamlining the process of investing in emeralds, making it more accessible and efficient for institutional investors. The inherent security and transparency of the blockchain contribute to increased trust and confidence in the market.
Paul Poltner, CEO and co-founder of GEMx, highlighted the significance of the partnership with Zodia Custody, stating that it represents a major milestone in their efforts to bring institutional-grade trust and stability to the gemstone investment market. He emphasized GEMx’s commitment to delivering real-world value through digital innovation, highlighting the security, auditability, and historical inflation resistance of their framework.
Zodia Custody’s involvement provides crucial security and regulatory compliance, leveraging its expertise in digital asset custody to safeguard the EmGemX tokens and the underlying emerald assets. This collaboration showcases the growing convergence of traditional finance and blockchain technology, opening up new avenues for institutional investment in previously inaccessible asset classes. The success of this initiative could pave the way for similar tokenization projects across various sectors, further blurring the lines between traditional and decentralized finance.
