Sui Network Steps in to Compensate Cetus Losses in Full After $223M Exploit
Cetus Protocol, Sui’s leading decentralized exchange (DEX), suffered a significant $223 million exploit last week, resulting in the theft of SUI, USDC, and other assets. The exploit leveraged spoof tokens like BULLA to manipulate price curves and reserve logic, allowing the attacker to drain liquidity pools without providing equivalent value. Over $162 million in stolen tokens remain frozen on-chain, subject to an upcoming community vote for their release and use in user compensation. The remaining stolen assets were bridged off-chain via multiple routes.
The attacker’s wallet, still active, currently holds over 12.9 million SUI, with additional assets likely laundered or exchanged across various networks. Following the exploit, Cetus immediately paused its smart contracts, launched an investigation, and witnessed a near 40% drop in its governance token, CETUS. Trading activity across Sui’s DeFi ecosystem slowed considerably due to liquidity concerns and heightened scrutiny of protocol security.
In a decisive move to protect its users and the Sui ecosystem, Cetus has secured a loan from the Sui Foundation. This loan, combined with existing cash and token reserves, enables Cetus to fully reimburse all affected users for the bridged assets. The reimbursement plan, however, critically depends on the successful outcome of the on-chain governance proposal. This proposal seeks community approval to utilize the frozen on-chain funds to complete the compensation process.
The Sui Foundation has publicly stated that a “full recovery is possible” with community support for the governance proposal. The Foundation emphasized that these are “extraordinary measures” taken to safeguard the Sui community’s interests and maintain confidence in the ecosystem. The successful passage of the governance proposal is paramount for the complete and immediate reimbursement of users affected by the Cetus exploit. This swift response highlights the collaborative efforts within the Sui ecosystem to mitigate the impact of this significant security incident.
