Superstate CEO Robert Leshner Buys Majority Stake in ‘Shady’ Liquor Vendor With BTC Strategy

Robert Leshner, CEO and co-founder of Superstate, a tokenization firm, has acquired a controlling 56.9% stake in publicly traded e-commerce liquor retailer LQR House (YHC) for $2.03 million. This significant investment immediately impacted LQR House’s stock price, causing a surge of up to 45% on Monday. The acquisition follows a period of considerable decline for LQR House, with its share price plummeting over 90% since March.

LQR House operates CWSpirits.com, an online platform selling premium liquor. Interestingly, the company previously embraced Bitcoin (BTC) as a treasury asset in November, allocating up to $1 million to BTC and enabling cryptocurrency payments. Leshner’s acquisition, however, comes with a caveat. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he openly acknowledged his limited due diligence on LQR House, describing the company’s history as “somewhat shady.” He intends to conduct a thorough review and overhaul of the business.

The SEC filing reveals Leshner’s plans to replace the current board of directors with a new team to pursue “strategic alternatives” and explore potential strategic transactions. He explicitly stated his concerns, warning investors about the risks involved in low market cap companies. Leshner’s transparency highlights the potential for significant losses, emphasizing the speculative nature of his investment.

While Leshner hasn’t explicitly detailed his plans regarding digital assets within the restructured LQR House, the acquisition aligns with a broader trend of prominent figures in the cryptocurrency space assuming leadership roles in publicly traded companies. This includes Joseph Lubin, Ethereum co-founder and Consensys CEO, who became chairman of Sharplink Gaming after its pivot to an ETH treasury strategy, and Thomas Lee, Fundstrat’s head of research, who joined BitMine Immersion Technology as chairman to focus on crypto treasury initiatives.

Leshner’s background as a founder of the Compound DeFi lending protocol adds another layer to this story, showcasing the intersection of traditional finance and the decentralized finance (DeFi) world. His acquisition of LQR House marks a bold move, and its success will be closely watched as an example of the evolving relationship between cryptocurrency and traditional businesses.
