Tether Invests in Blockchain Forensics Firm Crystal Intelligence to Fight Crypto Crime

Tether, issuer of the leading stablecoin USDT, has invested in blockchain analytics firm Crystal Intelligence to enhance its anti-crypto-crime efforts. This strategic move provides Tether direct access to Crystal’s advanced tools for real-time risk assessment, fraud detection, and regulatory compliance. The partnership significantly strengthens Tether’s capabilities in assisting global law enforcement agencies in tracking illicit activities.

The collaboration builds upon the existing relationship between Tether and Crystal, which jointly developed Scam Alert, a publicly accessible database identifying wallet addresses associated with fraudulent schemes. The rise of crypto-related crime necessitates such proactive measures. In 2024 alone, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center reported a staggering $9.3 billion in losses attributed to digital asset fraud – a 66% increase year-over-year.

This substantial increase highlights the urgent need for robust anti-fraud mechanisms within the cryptocurrency ecosystem. The partnership between Tether and Crystal underscores a commitment to tackling this growing challenge. The collaboration is already yielding results; Tether, alongside Coinbase, has aided the U.S. Secret Service in recovering $225 million in USDT stolen through romance-investment scams.

Tether’s commitment to combating illicit activities extends beyond this latest partnership. The company claims to have assisted over 255 law enforcement agencies across 55 jurisdictions and frozen over $2.7 billion in stablecoins linked to criminal activities. This proactive approach aims to deter the misuse of USDT and enhance the overall security of the cryptocurrency landscape.

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino emphasized the significance of this investment, stating that it will significantly enhance their collaborative efforts with law enforcement agencies. The clear message, according to Ardoino, is that using USDT for illicit purposes will lead to detection and prosecution. This proactive stance by a major player in the stablecoin market signals a concerted industry effort to address the growing issue of crypto-related crime. The partnership between Tether and Crystal represents a significant step forward in this ongoing fight.
