Tether Leads 30M-Euro Investment Round in Spanish Crypto Exchange Bit2Me
Tether, a prominent stablecoin issuer, has strategically invested €30 million ($35 million) in Bit2Me, a leading Spanish cryptocurrency exchange. This minority stake acquisition, spearheaded by Tether Ventures—Tether’s El Salvador-based investment arm—marks a significant step in Bit2Me’s expansion across Europe and Latin America.
The investment underscores Bit2Me’s recent achievement as the first Spanish-speaking fintech company to secure authorization from Spain’s securities regulator under the EU’s new Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework. This regulatory approval paves the way for Bit2Me to operate seamlessly throughout the European Union, significantly expanding its market reach.
Bit2Me’s strategic plan involves leveraging this funding to strengthen its presence in Latin America, particularly in Argentina, where the demand for cryptocurrency services is rapidly growing. The company already secured a Virtual Asset Service Provider license in Argentina last year, positioning itself advantageously within this burgeoning market.
Tether Ventures’ investment portfolio is notably diverse, encompassing various sectors. Previous investments include Juventus (Italian football club), Adecoagro (major Latin American producer), Crystal Intelligence (blockchain forensics firm), Rumble (YouTube competitor), and Elemental Altus (gold-focused investment firm). This demonstrates Tether’s broader strategy of diversifying its investments beyond the cryptocurrency space.
This investment by Tether signifies confidence in Bit2Me’s potential and its strategic alignment with Tether’s investment goals. Bit2Me already enjoys strong backing from prominent Spanish institutions, including Telefónica and banking giants such as Unicaja, BBVA, and Cecabank. While the precise size of Tether’s stake and Bit2Me’s new valuation remain undisclosed, the investment’s magnitude and the strategic partnerships involved signal a significant development in the European and Latin American cryptocurrency landscape. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino expressed enthusiasm about supporting Bit2Me’s role in developing regulated crypto-asset services globally. The partnership positions Bit2Me for substantial growth, capitalizing on the increasing demand for regulated and accessible cryptocurrency services.
