Tether to Mine Bitcoin With Adecoagro in Brazil Using Surplus Renewable Energy

Tether, issuer of the leading stablecoin USDT, is venturing into renewable energy-powered Bitcoin mining through a strategic partnership with South American agribusiness firm Adecoagro (AGRO) in Brazil. This collaboration marks a significant step in Tether’s expanding Bitcoin mining operations.

The partnership centers on a pilot project utilizing Adecoagro’s substantial surplus energy capacity—a noteworthy 230 megawatts—to power Bitcoin mining facilities. Adecoagro, in which Tether holds a 70% stake, is a major food producer with diverse holdings across South America, including sugar mills, rice farms, and dairy operations. This diversification allows for the innovative integration of Bitcoin mining into its existing infrastructure.

The initiative offers mutual benefits. For Adecoagro, it provides a means to stabilize energy pricing by securing a consistent buyer for its surplus power, while simultaneously gaining exposure to Bitcoin’s potential price appreciation. Mariano Bosch, Adecoagro’s CEO, highlighted this dual advantage, emphasizing the project’s role in securing energy prices and capitalizing on Bitcoin’s market potential.

For Tether, this partnership further solidifies its commitment to Bitcoin mining, building upon previous investments in regional mining facilities. The company has also developed Tether Mining OS, an operating system software for miners, with plans for open-source release in the coming months. This strategic move aligns with Tether’s ambitious goal, as stated by CEO Paolo Ardoino at the Bitcoin 2025 conference, to become the world’s largest Bitcoin miner by year’s end. Ardoino previously indicated a $2 billion investment in energy production and mining operations.

This collaboration showcases a novel approach to Bitcoin mining, leveraging existing renewable energy resources within a diversified agricultural business. The success of this pilot project could pave the way for similar initiatives, demonstrating the potential synergy between renewable energy and the cryptocurrency industry. Furthermore, the potential addition of Bitcoin to Adecoagro’s balance sheet adds another layer of integration between traditional finance and the burgeoning cryptocurrency sector. The ongoing expansion of Tether’s mining operations, coupled with its technological advancements, positions the company as a significant player in the future of Bitcoin mining.
