This One Metric Suggests Bitcoin Has Plenty of Room Left to Run
Bitcoin’s recent surge to just above $112,000, while a new all-time high, represents a relatively modest increase compared to its previous peak. Despite this, the confluence of bullish corporate adoption—with numerous public companies adding Bitcoin to their balance sheets—and on-chain data suggests further price appreciation is likely. A key metric in this analysis is the MVRV Z-Score, a valuable tool for assessing Bitcoin’s valuation relative to its fair market value.
Unlike a traditional Z-score, the MVRV Z-Score uniquely compares market value to realized value. Market value is calculated as the network’s valuation based on the current spot price multiplied by the total supply. Realized value, conversely, reflects the cumulative capital inflow into the asset. Historically, a significantly higher market value compared to realized value has signaled market tops (red zone), while a market value substantially below realized value has indicated market bottoms (green zone).
The MVRV Z-Score is mathematically defined as [(Market Cap – Realized Cap) / Standard Deviation of Market Cap]. The standard deviation is calculated cumulatively from the inception of available data, providing a long-term perspective. Currently, the MVRV Z-Score stands at 2.4. Past bear market lows have seen scores below zero (2015, 2019, 2022), whereas cycle tops have historically coincided with scores of 7 or higher (2017, 2021), according to Glassnode data.
This MVRV Z-Score of 2.4, when compared to historical data, suggests Bitcoin’s valuation is not yet in overbought territory, indicating significant potential for further upside. The current score is considerably lower than the scores observed at previous cycle peaks. While this analysis relies on a single metric, it offers a compelling argument for continued price appreciation, potentially exceeding previous cycle highs. The current market conditions, coupled with the relatively low MVRV Z-Score, paint a picture of a market with substantial room for growth. This analysis supports the projection of a considerable Bitcoin price boom in the near future, potentially exceeding 30%.
