May 30 – This Wednesday will see the Finalissima 2022 played at Wembley Stadium between South American champions Argentina and European champions Italy, a revived version of the Artemio Franchi Cup, last played in 1993.
The match is symbolic in that it rekindles the old South America vs Europe battle for supremacy.
It has also sparked another race for top spot – in the NFT world. It demonstrates an interesting rights-sharing situation where more than one rights holder can benefit from the IP of the Finalissima and could prove a model for other major events in a rights category where boundaries are still being drawn.
UEFA partner Topps is creating a Commemorative Finalissima NFT, while the Argentine FA is launching its own AFA Icons collection.
From tomorrow (March 31) fans can reserve their UEFA commemorative NFT by creating a free Topps NFT account and signing up for the NFT newsletter. Later in the month, unique redemption codes will be provided to redeem the NFT on Topps
The AFC has partnered with blockchain technology studio Ethernity who will make their AFA Icons NFT collection drop tomorrow.
The Ethernity drop will celebrate a classic World Cup semi-final in 1990 with Diego Maradona, Claudio Caniggia and Sergio Goycochea featured. The second piece will feature Lionel Messi, Lautaro Martinez and Rodrigo de Paul who starred in Argentina’s Copa America 2021 win. Both pieces have been created by Anthony Edward.
