Trumps May Have Sold Platform Stake as U.S. Stablecoins See Wave of Good News

The recent bipartisan passage of a stablecoin regulation bill in the U.S. Senate coincides with a significant development in former President Donald Trump’s crypto holdings. Disclosures reveal that the Trump family reduced its stake in World Liberty Financial (WLFI), a crypto company including a USD1 stablecoin, by approximately 20%. DT Marks DEFI LLC, an entity affiliated with the Trump family, now holds roughly 40% of WLFI, down from a previous 60%.

This reduction comes amidst considerable controversy surrounding Trump’s extensive crypto involvement. His reported tens of millions of dollars in gains from crypto ventures have fueled debate regarding U.S. digital asset regulation. The Senate’s stablecoin bill, now awaiting House approval, faced temporary setbacks due to Democratic concerns over Trump’s own stablecoin operation.

Despite accusations of conflicts of interest from Senators Warren, Blumenthal, and Murphy, the bill’s advancement potentially offers World Liberty Financial a path towards greater regulatory stability, provided the company meets stringent reserve and oversight requirements. While the Trump administration claims transparency in the former president’s business dealings, a lack of full disclosure regarding the family’s individual stakes in WLFI remains a point of contention. The exact nature of the family’s ownership and management roles within WLFI is unclear.

Adding to the complexity, Trump recently hosted a private dinner for key investors in his personal memecoin, many of whom were unidentified foreign nationals. This event, along with his past crypto skepticism, adds another layer to his multifaceted involvement in the industry. This includes the sale of NFTs, his media company’s announcement of a $2.5 billion bitcoin treasury initiative, and son Eric Trump’s participation in a new bitcoin mining venture. These diverse activities highlight the former president’s extensive and multifaceted connections across the cryptocurrency landscape. CoinDesk’s attempts to obtain comments from WLFI and Trump’s representatives were unsuccessful. A recent filing indicates that Trump’s family-linked crypto firm generated $57 million in revenue last year.
