UK to Propose Restrictions on How Banks Can Deal With Crypto Next Year

The United Kingdom is preparing to tighten its regulations on banks’ involvement with cryptocurrencies. The Bank of England, aiming to safeguard financial stability, plans to introduce new proposals by 2026 that will likely encourage banks to maintain minimal exposure to crypto assets. This move follows the collapses of Silicon Valley Bank and Silvergate Bank, both of which had crypto clients, highlighting the potential risks associated with this volatile sector.

David Bailey, the Bank of England’s executive director of prudential policy, explained the rationale behind the stricter approach. He emphasized the need for a cautious stance, particularly concerning cryptocurrencies with high price volatility and the potential for complete investor loss. The regulatory approach will likely begin restrictively, with the possibility of easing restrictions over time as more evidence becomes available.

The upcoming regulations will align with the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision’s framework, mandating disclosure of banks’ crypto exposure by the beginning of 2026. This framework aims to provide a standardized approach for assessing risks across different nations. The Basel Committee also suggested a 1% limit on bank exposure to cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.

The Bank of England’s initiatives will be guided by the Basel Committee’s standards, ensuring a coordinated international response to the challenges posed by cryptocurrencies. This comprehensive approach acknowledges the interconnectedness of the global financial system and the need for robust risk management. The Bank of England’s actions are part of a broader regulatory effort within the UK. The Financial Conduct Authority, the country’s other financial regulator, is preparing to implement a new regime for crypto firms in 2026, further solidifying the UK’s approach to regulating the digital asset space.

The UK’s proactive approach to crypto regulation demonstrates a commitment to maintaining financial stability while acknowledging the innovative potential of this technology. The planned measures will balance encouraging responsible innovation with mitigating the risks associated with the volatility of the cryptocurrency market. The combination of stricter banking regulations and a comprehensive framework for crypto firms will create a more stable and transparent environment for the UK’s financial sector.
