Winklevoss Claims JPMorgan Halted Gemini Onboarding After Data Access Fees Criticism

Gemini co-founder Tyler Winklevoss alleges that JPMorgan Chase halted Gemini’s onboarding process in retaliation for his criticism of the bank’s new fintech fee structure. This fee, levied on fintech platforms accessing customer banking data, sparked Winklevoss’s public condemnation of JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon. He argued on X (formerly Twitter) that these charges would cripple fintech companies facilitating the connection between traditional banking and crypto services, hindering innovation and harming consumers. Winklevoss characterized the fees as “egregious regulatory capture.”

JPMorgan, while not directly addressing Gemini’s claims, justified its actions to Forbes. The bank cited the staggering volume of approximately 2 billion monthly data requests from third parties, many unrelated to genuine customer activity. The fees, according to JPMorgan, are intended to mitigate misuse and enhance consumer protection.

Winklevoss subsequently revealed on X that JPMorgan informed Gemini of a pause in its re-onboarding. This isn’t the first time Gemini has faced banking restrictions from JPMorgan. The exchange was previously offboarded during the period referred to as “Operation Choke Point 2.0,” a time when numerous crypto firms experienced banking disruptions amid heightened regulatory scrutiny.

Winklevoss vows to continue his opposition, labeling JPMorgan’s actions as “anti-competitive, rent-seeking behavior” and an unethical attempt to financially destabilize fintech and crypto companies. The timing of this dispute is noteworthy, considering Gemini’s recent confidential filing for an initial public offering (IPO) earlier this month. The exchange is also expanding its services, recently adding tokenized stocks to its offerings. The conflict highlights the ongoing tension between traditional financial institutions and the burgeoning cryptocurrency industry, particularly concerning data access and regulatory pressures. The situation underscores the challenges faced by crypto companies in navigating the complexities of the traditional banking system and the potential for conflicts to arise from differing regulatory interpretations and business interests.
