XRP Futures Open Interest Zooms to 5-Month High as Traders Seek Bullish Bets

XRP futures contracts are exhibiting bullish signals, indicating a potential surge in momentum for the payments-focused cryptocurrency. A significant increase in open interest, a key indicator of market activity, has been observed. Data from Velo, which tracks major exchanges including Binance, Bybit, OKX, and Hyperliquid, reveals that cumulative open interest in XRP perpetual futures briefly reached 800 million XRP on Monday—the highest level since January 19th. While currently at 743 million XRP, this still represents a 33% increase compared to June 22nd, when XRP hit a temporary low of $1.90.

Open interest signifies the number of active futures contracts, with a rise generally indicating increased market participation and capital influx. The recent surge appears to be driven primarily by bullish sentiment, as evidenced by consistently positive perpetual funding rates. These rates, collected approximately every eight hours by exchanges, reflect the premium paid by long positions (bullish bets) to short positions (bearish bets) when demand for long positions outweighs that for short positions. Funding rates have occasionally exceeded an annualized 10%, further reinforcing the bullish bias.

Adding to the optimistic outlook is the “top trader long/short ratio” on Binance’s XRP/USDT market. Coinglass data shows a ratio of 1.90, meaning there are nearly twice as many long positions as short positions. This significant imbalance underscores the prevailing bullish sentiment among major market participants. The options market also reflects this trend, with traders on Deribit actively pursuing higher strike XRP call options last week.

Despite these positive futures signals, the XRP spot price has yet to experience significant volatility. While a brief peak at $2.35 (a level last seen in late May) was observed on Monday, the price quickly retreated to around $2.25, where it currently remains. This disconnect between the robust futures market and relatively subdued spot price suggests a degree of caution or anticipation among investors, awaiting confirmation of a sustained price increase. The overall trend, however, points towards a strengthening bullish momentum in the XRP market.
