ZKsync’s Airbender zkVM Proves Ethereum Blocks in 35 Seconds

Matter Labs, the creators of the layer-2 scaling solution ZKSync, announced a significant advancement in zero-knowledge proof technology at the Permissionless conference. Their new cryptographic prover, “Airbender,” promises to revolutionize the speed and efficiency of layer-2 networks.

Provers are essential components of layer-2 scaling solutions. They generate zero-knowledge proofs, cryptographic confirmations that are relayed to the base-layer blockchain (Ethereum in this case), establishing a secure link between the two. Airbender’s groundbreaking achievement lies in its unparalleled speed. Using a single GPU, it generates Ethereum block proofs in a mere 35 seconds—a substantial improvement over existing technology.

This speed increase has significant implications for transaction costs, pushing them towards fractions of a cent. This is crucial for applications requiring numerous microtransactions, such as high-frequency trading and decentralized social media platforms. Alex Gluchowski, Matter Labs co-founder, highlighted the importance of this advancement, stating that faster proofs translate to faster finality, cheaper applications, and the ability to generate proofs outside of large, centralized GPU farms.

Airbender, an open-source zero-knowledge virtual machine (zkVM), leverages the RISC-V architecture. This choice aligns with Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin’s vision for a more efficient blockchain, replacing the current EVM. Gluchowski emphasized that Airbender’s development began over a year ago, driven by foresight into the future demands of ZK applications and Ethereum’s scaling needs. Buterin’s recent endorsement further validates their approach.

Currently in its early stages, Airbender is accessible to developers through a dedicated testing application. Pending ZKSync governance approval, a protocol upgrade incorporating Airbender is anticipated later this summer. Gluchowski envisions Airbender as a pivotal foundation for a more interconnected and verifiable internet, enabling “home-proving,” real-time cross-chain user experiences, and on-the-fly verification for ZK applications. The 35-second proof generation time using a single GPU represents a pivotal moment in the evolution of zero-knowledge technology and layer-2 scaling.
