Swiss watchmaker Franck Muller Unveils Limited Edition Solana Watch

Franck Muller, a Swiss watchmaker, is releasing a limited-edition Solana-themed watch collection, merging luxury timepieces with the Web3 ecosystem. Each of the 1,111 watches contains a unique QR code linking directly to the owner’s Solana wallet address, creating a physical representation of digital assets. Priced at 20,000 Swiss francs (approximately $24,300), these watches are targeted at individuals within the Solana ecosystem seeking to express their wealth and digital identity.

This launch, however, coincides with a concerning rise in physical attacks targeting individuals perceived to possess cryptocurrency wealth. Recent high-profile incidents highlight this escalating risk. The daughter and grandson of Pierre Noizat, CEO of Paymium, were targeted in an attempted kidnapping, captured on video and shared widely on social media. A previous incident in the same city involved the abduction of a crypto millionaire’s father, resulting in a severed finger before rescue. Similar attacks have also affected David Balland, co-founder of Ledger, and his wife, who were abducted and later rescued, with a paid ransom subsequently seized.

These events underscore a significant security concern for cryptocurrency holders, particularly those openly displaying their affluence. While Franck Muller promotes the collection as a “phygital” symbol of identity and ownership, the increased risk of targeted violence raises questions about the practicality and wisdom of publicly showcasing crypto-related wealth. The inherent value proposition of the watch, therefore, needs to be considered against this backdrop of escalating criminal activity. The collection represents a fascinating intersection of luxury goods and digital assets but simultaneously highlights the potential dangers of openly flaunting crypto-related wealth in the current climate. The rising number of such attacks serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with conspicuous displays of cryptocurrency-related affluence. Potential buyers should carefully weigh the inherent risks before making a purchase.
